Dear Mayor Coleman, I am writing you to express my strong support for the effort to put more police officers on the street NOW! I know you are in favor of adding 100 more officers, but it’s important to set a firm deadline. I think adding 125 new officers by 2009 is a reasonable timetable and I ask you to make this your first priority. Many will ask you ‘how can we pay for this?’ But my reply is how can we not pay for it? What’s a higher priority for St. Paul city government than the safety of its citizens? Right now crime is growing and I’m very concerned for the future. We don’t want St. Paul to become another Minneapolis where crime is out of control and the police department does not have enough officers. Please give our police department the new officers it needs now to prevent crime in the future.
